The Bilby

(Macrotis lagotis)

The Greater Bilby is often called the Bilby or the long eared bandicoot. It is a ground dwelling marsupial and is the largest of the bandicoot family.

The Bilby has been chosen as the endangered species mascot for all endangered species.

A solitary creature, the Bilby is nocturnal (comes out at night).

The male Bilby is larger than the female and can grow to be 20 cm tall and weigh up to 2.5kg. Young Bilbies are carried in their mothers pouch.

Insect larvae, bulbs, fruit and fungi all are part of the Bilby's diet. Living in Australia, the driest continent on Earth, the Bilby aquires most of its water from the food that it eats.

A Bilby is blue grey, with a fawn stripe running along its hips. It has a long snout and strong back legs. The Bilby is a very strong burrower.
